Weights are from the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart, measured by spooning the ingredient into the cup and leveling it off. Ounces here are weight ounces, not fluid ounces.
Why cups to grams depends on the ingredient
A cup measures volume, a gram measures weight. A cup of water weighs 227 grams, but a cup of flour weighs 120 grams and a cup of honey weighs 336, because they pack into the cup differently. That is why there is no single cups to grams number, and why a converter needs to know the ingredient.
US measures used here: 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 8 fluid ounces. Fluid ounces measure volume; the ounces in the results above are weight ounces.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert cups to grams?
Multiply the number of cups by the weight of one cup of that ingredient. For all-purpose flour that is 120 grams per cup, for granulated sugar 198 grams, for butter 226 grams.
Is a cup always 240 ml?
A US cup is about 237 ml, often rounded to 240. A metric cup, used in Australia and elsewhere, is 250 ml. This converter uses US cups.
How many grams in a cup of water?
About 227 grams in this chart, which follows King Arthur's figure. A US cup of water weighs 236.6 grams by exact volume; the chart rounds to 8 ounces.
Why do different websites give different grams per cup?
Measuring method. Spooning flour into a cup gives about 120 grams; scooping it packs in more, up to about 140. Always check which method a chart uses.
Are ounces and fluid ounces the same?
No. Ounces measure weight and fluid ounces measure volume. They only match for water and similar liquids.
